Historic Hole Prisons in Nuremberg
Historic Hole Prisons in Nuremberg – Cellar vaults with a history
In the old town hall, just a few steps from the Main Market, there are Nuremberg’s historic Hole Prisons. Hole Prisons are those detention centers of the 14th century that have been preserved, nearly unchanged. There are 15 cells of around 2x2 meters. The prisoners had to wait here, in absolute darkness, until their trial began. A cock above cell number 11 tells that there was an arsonist. A black cat above cell 12 alludes to a calumniator who was imprisoned here.
Nuremberg Hole Prisons – An exciting excursion into the Middle-Ages
The historic Hole Prisons can be visited during a guided tour and provide a realistic insight into Justice of Middle-Ages. The Hole Prisons include also the torture chamber. This chamber, named “Chapel” because of its dimensions, documents torture methods of the Middle-Ages in a lively way. The cells were poorly equipped with wooden planks, a bench, a guard-bed, and a pail, truly following the historic example.
