Festung Hohensalzburg

Fortress Hohensalzburg – Above the roofs of Salzburg

The Fortress Hohensalzburg graces Festungsberg Hill. Looking down, the Mozart town lies at the feet of the viewer, 120 meters below. In visiting Fortress Hohensalzburg, tourists find a point of interest which makes history alive. Archbishop Leonard von Keutschach is responsible for its current appearance. He made the relative transformation in the 15th century. While walking through the fortress area, attentive visitors will notice the blazon of the probably most hardheaded archbishop of Salzburg in many places.

Hohensalzburg Fortress – a Salzburg sight rich of history

In former times, fortress inhabitants probably didn’t lack anything. The school building, the church, and the banqueting-hall testify that the complex once resembled a small town. A guided tour through the magnificent rooms is an impressing experience. The main point of interest of the fortress is the Golden Hall with its blue-red wooden paneling and a rich-decorated majolica oven. Interrogations took place in the torture tower. Today, visitors enjoy the view over the town. Medieval art and historic arms are among the exhibits of the Fortress Museum.
