The “Wienerwald” – Vienna’s green lung

The “Wienerwald” constitutes the north-eastern part of the East Alps and extends over a surface of 80 square kilometers west of Vienna. These richly faceted uplands are a popular recreational area of Vienna. The north of the landscape descending to the Danube is dominated by gentle hills and beech woods. The appearance of the sunny east side of the “Wienerwald” is characterized by black pines. The southeastern part of the uplands with peaks up to 900 meters has a rugged appearance and features numerous canyon-like valley ends.

The “Wienerwald” is rich of footpaths and observation points. Especially popular is the ascent of Vienna’s domestic mountains, Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg, which offer a unique view over Vienna.
